Thanks to our modern incineration facilities, we make an important contribution towards ensuring hazardous waste is treated safely

Incinerating waste & producing energy.
RETHERM: thermal treatment of hazardous waste

  • Despite the technological progress already made, it is not always possible to send hazardous waste for materials recycling. In such cases, the safest and most eco-friendly way to treat these materials is to have them incinerated in one of our high performance facilities. For, RETHERM helps to conserve our planet's natural resources – in three different ways.

One solution, three advantages

Firstly, the consumption of primary fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas, is reduced as energy is generated as part of the waste incineration process. Secondly, the FGD gypsum that accumulates during incineration is processed so that it can be used as a building material. Thirdly, the residual materials resulting from the flue gas cleaning processes can also be recycled. The large volumes of gypsum are, in particular, used by our sister company, REMONDIS Production, which returns the various calcium sulphate products to production cycles under its RADDIBIN® brand name.

Thanks to the state-of-the-art technology used at our facilities, our RETHERM division also makes an important contribution towards protecting the environment and preventing climate change.

The process used by our high-temperature incineration plants

Our range of plants

  • Liquid, pumpable and gaseous waste is treated in the high-temperature incineration plant (HTVA) at the Bramsche Industrial Recycling Centre. Reactive and toxic chemicals are incinerated at temperatures exceeding 1,000°C.
  • Our REMONDIS SAVA hazardous waste incineration plant in Brunsbüttel ensures that hazardous waste is treated safely. Any residual materials are sent for recycling.
  • The Lünen power plant is equipped with efficient circulating fluidised-bed furnace technology and state-of-the-art flue gas cleaning systems.
  • The biomass-fired power plant in Lünen generates energy from waste timber. Compared to conventional energy production methods, this carbon-neutral incineration process reduces carbon dioxide emissions by around 100,000 tonnes helping to protect the environment.
  • In addition, we own shares in the following waste incineration plants: TRV Wesseling, MVA Bremerhaven, MVA Frankfurt, GMVA Oberhausen. Moreover, we have guaranteed access to fixed capacities at RZR Herten, MEAB Schöneiche as well as at various cement works and industrial power stations.

The Lippe Plant

  • The company's own power station at the REMONDIS Lippe Plant is run on, among other materials, substitute fuels made from hazardous waste. It supplies the site – one of the world's largest industrial recycling centres – with electricity, steam, compressed air and heat.
